Members of the CoR’s CIVEX commission adopted today unanimously the own-initiative opinion on the ‘Next steps for a sustainable European future – European action for sustainability’, by Franco Iacop, President of the Regional Assembly of Friuli-Venezia Giulia (PES/Italy). The opinion sets out how local realities could implement the objectives of the Agenda 2030 and contribute to developing a sustainable future.
Bruxelles, 06 April 2017. ”It is necessary to give local and regional authorities an important role in this process, considering their closeness to citizens and their ability to contribute to the re-awakening of the consensus towards the European integration project”, underlined Iacop. “Subsidiarity represents the best solution for politics aimed at building a sustainable future and for integrating the 10 priorities of the Juncker Commission, the 11 thematic objectives of the Cohesion Funds and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.”
The 2030 Agenda represents the first universal framework in developing a sustainable future as it has been adopted by the United Nations in September 2015. The rapporteur states that, in order to produce a concrete impact on the life of citizens, the politics should be built on a bottom-up approach, based on instruments and platforms that already exist, such as the Sustainable Development Knowledge Platform (multi-stakeholder platform), to which the CoR should be associated.
“Local realities are the ones who have put in practice the main points of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Particularly, the new policies have to contribute to the achievement and to the growth of the social level by creating, for example, new workplaces, especially for young people and women”, Iacop emphasised. He also underlined the importance of working on a transition towards a green and circular economy, by encouraging the production of environmentally friendly products and ensuring the necessary financing.
Finally, the implementation of the 2030 Agenda should promote territorial competition, the realisation of new infrastructures and the creation of innovations.
The opinion is due to be adopted at the CoR’s plenary session on 12-13th July.
